Long ago in the age of sails, sailors believed in the existence of mermaids that were said to be bewitching half-women, half fish. Yet, today we know now that these mermaids were in fact manatees. There are many different species such as the West Indian Manatee, West African Manatee, the Dugong and the Amazonian Manatee. These gentle and slow moving creatures have no natural enemies and live in shallow waters feeding on plankton and other plants and coming up to breath at the average of 3 to 5mins. Yet, these creatures face the very real threat of extinction due human related activities whereby the main cause of manatee mortality is collision with watercrafts. Other causes of human-related manatee mortalities include being crushed and/or drowned in canal locks and flood control structures; ingestion of fish hooks, litter and entanglement in crab trap lines. Ultimately, however, loss of habitat is the most serious threat facing manatees today. Already, one species of the manatee, the Steller’s sea cow had been hunted to extinction in 1768. There are approximately only 3,000 West Indian manatees left in the United States.

border into the picture. Obviously it's true purpose is to frame the scene,
but it is something actually there under sea. It was also an excellent
choice to use the kelp to help with a tight fit around the manatee. It
creates a nice echo to the light, which is getting darker in that same 'v'
form.
The progressively darker light, coupled with the rays does so well to show
we are under water. I would have understood where we are even without the
bubbles. On that subject you have done a good job of filling the background
with just enough wisps of objects to help with creating depth.
Your shading on the girl is much better than your previous humans. I like
how you have kept your style of drawing humans, yet at the same time
progressed in your skill of showing form through more advanced shading.
My only complaint is how dark the manatee is. I think it works well to have
him fairly dark as to create the excellent contrast you have between him
and the girl, but I think the face/neck should be lightened up a lot to
really show your skill in your ability to show his skin/flab. Now as a the
light source goes, both their backs should technically be lighter, but
despite this, I think I would still lighten up the face.
Great job overall. Sexy shading has lead to this probably being my new
favorite!

A full moon will rise tonight, do not run, and do not fight if you want to stay in sight. Make a wish upon the moon, it`s fun and games, but do not swoon. You may not be able to return anytime soon. ♥
